Moon Cocoon

At the beginning of this crazy year 2020, I found myself listening to a lot of dungeon synth. If you haven’t heard of it (neither had I) – it’s a subgenre of dark ambient, influenced by Dead can Dance (or so I heard!) and often sounds like RPG music. I’ve been a fan of game music for a long time, so this genre was an exciting find!

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for inspiration to hit me and it happened on the night of a full moon (I find working with the phases of the moon makes everything even more magical). Emotionally drained and exhausted, I felt the need to cocoon myself in some dreamy, dark sounds, so I started weaving…

What’s weird about this is how well the theme of “Moon Cocoon” fit the lockdowns, shelter in place, global covid-19 pandemic and isolation to follow, not long after I wrote this song. When the UK went into lockdown, I decided I wanted to release it sooner, hoping it would help and inspire others in a time of need and uncertainty. The original plan was to release it with my next album but that no longer felt right. It needed to be out there NOW.

I also performed a “live” version of Moon Cocoon for FAE Magazine’s Instagram. It was a challenging thing to do and pushed my mental boundaries, as we just went into lockdown a couple of days ago and my mind was full of fear and anxiety – and I know I wasn’t the only one feeling this way of course!

However I’m so glad I did this for you guys! Some of the most amazing feedback was how this song helped people – care workers, essential workers and those of us stuck at home, who were feeling lonely.

As I write this, we might be looking at a second wave here in the UK. I hope this blog post finds you well, wherever you are. And please know, you are not alone, no matter how lonely you might be feeling right now.

Love and Unicorns,
Mira xxx
